Hell comes home to Jersey. Seven ancient demons known as the Fallen have awakened in Newark, New Jersey, after 100 years. Fortunately for Mike and Ann, so has the one man who can stop them, Joseph Miller. Trapped in a hospital filled with mythical monsters, only together can they unravel the mystery of the Cursed and escape with not only their lives but their very humanity.
Ancient Awakening is a horror/action novel with just the right touch of comedy. It is the first book in the series The Ancient, which follows the adventures of eccentric demon hunter Joseph Miller. His job is to defend the human race against seven mythical demons and their offspring. Unfortunately for us, he has been dead for the last hundred years.
Ancient Awakening The Ancient Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Matthew Bryan Laube B J Harrison Matthew Laube Books
I love books with demons, vamps, werewolves, and other scary creatures that come creeping and oozing out of the dark to strike fear and mayhem on us innocent, puny humans. You get a whole bunch of that when these monsters take over a hospital and start eating or turning people. It appears the deadly ancient ones, seven monsters of legend, are back to do what they do best.
A young lady seeking her absent boyfriend lands right in the middle of this mess. Along with an injured cop, and a strange little man who happens to be “THE” master monster hunter.
The author wastes no time stirring up trouble for these characters and keeps monsters and humans busy: running, dying, the usual stuff.
I did like the creatures, the human characters, and the plot. But it felt a bit rushed at times, and the story didn’t always flow smoothly. And I wanted to know more about the monster hunter and the young woman’s connection with monsters. I suspect that’s the authors plan as I learned at the ending, which was an ending and a cliff hanger, that there’s more to come in this tale.
While this first book didn’t completely wow me, it certainly showed promise and I will be reading the next book. You see, the author has me very curious about one particular monster. I have a feeling I’ll be getting some of the answers I seek and plenty more action.

Ancient Awakening The Ancient Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Matthew Bryan Laube B J Harrison Matthew Laube Books Reviews
I enjoyed this book, well written. It was a bit strange, hard to tell what was going on but then all falls into place. Could be I was just having an off day when I started to book. There is violence with blood and such, to me it doesn't bother me, but someone may find it bothersome. There is also "colorful" language . I have to get the next one !!! I'm hooked
Oh man was this one a tough call. There are aspects of this book that are just fantastic. There are moments where the humor is dead on, and the mysterious Mr. Miller is one of the most promising heroes of the genre.
At the same time, however, these great aspects are just as often followed by true klunkers. At one point, a character finds a room with dead bodies- and then(!) has a "sixth sense" of danger.
Definitely worth a try, but not something I can wholeheartedly recommend by any means.
I was searching for free book and this came up and had good reviews. I decided to read the first few pages and immediately was taken by the story. I can honestly stay that i have not read anything of a similar nature in the past and that is refreshing. Not quite horror, note quite fantasy, but very interesting. I love the story line, however, I felt like the first book is only 1/2 a book. I don't think it had a good ending point and after reading the 2nd book I feel like that should have all been one book. My biggest criticism for both books is just that with the descriptions given I have a hard time painting a picture in my head of what the demons/monsters look like. Great book and the 2nd book is just as good.
A demon hunter lives, dies and is resurrected over and over every hundred years or so when demons revisit our world. Officer Mike Samson and Miss A, are two friends that he makes along the way. Both are more than they thought they were - heroes and perhaps something more. Follow our intrepid heroes as they battle supernatural and demonic forces. Enjoy !
I picked this up thanks to my favorite blog. I don't normally read the more Horror genre (though thanks to the did pick up some classics (House on the Borderland, Brood of the Witch-Queen, The Ghost Pirates - but I digress). So give this one a try, and was very pleasantly surprised as I read it in one sitting.
I think the author did a good job of setting the characters up for the reader to get invested in. I found myself caring about them and felt bad when several were killed. Oddly, Miller didn't work that well for me. I loved his fascination by everything modern, but he just didn't click for me. Enjoyed reading him fight, though.
I was glad to read the epilogue. Very nice set up for something that has never happened before has happened, and what will happen when the characters meet up again.
The modern culture references make sense, but I do wonder how the story will age.
Worth picking up and trying.
This book attracted my interest when put it in my recommendation list based on other books I have read. I went ahead and ordered it and am glad that I did. If you like stories based in myth, demonology and the supernatural, this is a book for you. The story is fast paced and the characters are all people about whom we come to care, rather than just cardboard cut-outs used to fill a hole in the plot or storyline. The action in the story is fast paced, making it a good, fun read and despite the subject matter, the author isn't afraid to use humor in the story, poking fun at events that occur and at the genre itself. The unfolding mythology that Laube has created develops nicely as the story progresses and also gives us hints at what may be to come in future installments and books. The reactions of the characters to the events they encounter, which are far beyond anything considered to be "natural" are authentic and believable. They doubt their eyes and brains just as any of us would do when presented with an ancient demon appearing in front of us. The propogation of this set of demons and how they come to awaken is only partially explored and Laube's leaving us without all the answers works well to increase the anticipation for the next book. I give this 4 out of 5 stars, though debated strongly about giving it the fifth star too. If the second and any subsequent books live up to the promise of the first, they will get all five. I definitely recommend this book if you enjoy a good supernatural or good horror story.
