Laughing in the Rain SelfCare for the Storms of Life Hillary Saffran 9781452587349 Books Reviews
Alaskan writer, human resources specialist, teacher, Toastmaster, single mom, ventriloquist, and clown, this author writes a “book on self-care tips while going through some form of adversity”. Her topics are universal and relatable. With Self Care Tips #1-#50 and quotes, she uses personal stories to illustrate her points.
Ms. Saffran teaches that part of existence is getting through those life cycle experiences that may challenge us. These include Parenting, Family Life, Relationships, Pregnancy, Aging, Work, Dieting, Health and the Weather. Her quotes connect us with famous and not so famous people’s personal stories. For example, regarding Parenting, Ed Asner said – “Raising kids is part joy and part gorilla warfare.” Regarding Family Life, Bob Hope said - “I grew up with six brothers. That’s how I learned to dance – waiting for the bathroom”. Regarding Pregnancy, Joan Rivers said, “I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw that my bath toys were a toaster and a radio.” Also, regarding Pregnancy, Ms. Saffran herself talks about “50 Shades of Stretch Marks”. Regarding Technology Stress, our writer talks about nurturing friends less they become over-medicated after buying their first computer and their first of “other electronic necessities”.
Hillary reminds us about the social benefits of humor, laughter, and mirth. These include “bonding with friends and family” and “happier marriages and close relationships…”. She asks us to share our stories and anecdotes with her on how we dealt with humor with subjects including Parenting, Family Life, Relationships, Pregnancy, Aging, Work, Dieting Health. She asks we email her at book@laughterishealth.com so she can collect these for a sequel book to this current one.
Our author jokes that ‘“Stressed” spelled backwards is “desserts”. This book was a surprisingly delicious treat. I recommend it either in one or multiple sittings, in an easy chair, and with your favorite beverage. Enjoy!
This is a combination stress-relief and humor book. The author has a background in social services, so is familiar with a lot of modern stressors, as well as, possible solutions for them. There are sixteen different chapters that run the gamut of parenting to home ownership to modern technology. Scattered throughout them are fifty different stress relievers the author calls self-care tips. Also included in the book are photos and sketches that carry out the humor.
The author should be applauded for keeping the humor clean. In case any readers find it objectionable, the word "hell" is used a few times in this book. The humor is really geared towards adults, and even more so towards those who have children. That is not because of anything offending but, that particular group of people would more easily identify with the situations she talks about.
The author lives in Alaska, so she has described some situations she has experienced there that I thought were very funny. I also liked the part about trying to buy a home, including the things that could go wrong when attempting to do that. In between the humorous parts, and the self-care sections of this book, the reader gets to know the author. She is a caring person who really wants to help people. Since her self-care tips are simple to put into action, it is easy to give them a try. Laughter is also a great way to combat stress. So if you are in search for some stress relief, with some humor thrown in, pick up this book.
The author provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest review. I have not been compensated in any other manner.
In "Laughing in the Rain", Hillary Saffran tries to help readers take the edge off of their stressful situations by showing a humorous attitude in areas that most people can connect with. She talks about areas such as college, what womens' bodies are like after they give birth, the age when it all starts coming apart, and even dating after a divorce. She understands that life gets very stressful because she has been through many of the situations herself and tries to help readers take the edge off and make their lives easier through laughing. The book also contains some humorous quotes by well-known people, and random pictures.
Hillary had a funny of way of showing me how something joyful and funny can come from each stressful situation I encounter, I just have to look for the humor and I will find it. It will take an edge off of the hardships, helping me to find some good in those situations, if I want and need to laugh and chill out. She shows how humor can often be found in serious situations, sometimes even in Bible stories. It is often hard for me to want to find something to laugh about if it sounds like it's supposed to be serious, or it is a serious situation. So, I am thankful this book encouraged me to try to dig a little deeper for some humor when dealing with serious situations.
